In the summer of 2017, Redevel(o)p opened; the design competition that started the adventure of Dichterbij Velp and Phidias Community Cooking towards the search for brilliant ideas for the redevelopment of the Dichterbij Velp site.
From idea to competition
From the very beginning, it became clear that Stichting Dichterbij saw a challenge, and new potential, in the use of the Dichterbij Velp site. This challenge initially focused on the activity centre. Later, the connection between the functions on the site and the connection with Velp was also taken into account.
The size and composition of the target groups served by Stichting Dichterbij has changed in recent years and would change even further in the near future. With this changed scope and composition of the target group, the required and desired facilities, locations and functions of real estate have gradually changed. In addition to the target group, the organization itself had also undergone the necessary changes, with a no longer fitting working environment as a result.
Would building or remodelling be the right solution? And what other possibilities were there in this spacious and green area? Phidias Community Cooking proposed to launch an international competition, which would give Dichterbij a multitude of creative ideas. For Mikado – another location of Stichting Dichterbij – a similar approach was chosen before. And that is how a special new collaboration started.
In August of this year the Redevel(o)p competition started, in which we invited architects, designers and other creative people to share their brilliant ideas with us. Designers from all over the world signed up for the competition and in the past few months worked towards their master plan, which could be submitted until November 29th.
The central issue was as follows. “Dichterbij Velp is looking for an innovative concept that offers space for living, daytime activities and leisure, corresponding to the needs of its customers and employees. It must become a place where clients can receive care in a safe and sheltered environment. At the same time, the new concept must have an open and transparent character that stimulates social integration and strengthens the connection with the inhabitants of Velp. ”
Until the very last moment the entries came in from China, Israel, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Taiwan. Fourteen teams and individual participants submitted their design.
Our first impression? We are very positively surprised! The designs are varied, innovative and offer many opportunities for the future redevelopment in Velp.
Very soon the entries will be presented to our Jury. The Jury consists of professionals from Stichting Dichterbij, a parent of a client, specialists in real-estate and professionals from the architectural field, stakeholders from the area, a councillor of the municipality of Grave and the chairman of the village council. Together they will choose the winning plan mid-January 2018. Participants of Redevel(o)p will be personally informed as soon as the winners are known.
And the winner is…
After the Juryday, we are waiting for the multi-day exhibition that will be held on the Velp site in the spring of 2018. Residents, employees, local residents and other interested people are welcome to view the entries! An important part of this multi-day exhibition is the Award Ceremony. Here, the winners will be announced and receive their prizes.
Workshop with the winners
After announcing the winners, Phidias Community Cooking organizes workshops with the winners. During this workshop, the winners will have the opportunity to present their winning entries and to look at the possibilities together with the client. In addition to the cash prizes won, the winners will also be able to co-realize their plans.
In order to achieve a possible redevelopment, Phidias and Stichting Dichterbij and stakeholders see the follow-up steps with regard to the redevelopment of the Velp site.
We will keep you informed about the Juryday, the Exhibition, submissions and more via our website and social media. Curious about the entries? Check out the sneak preview here! Do you want to see them up close? You are most welcome at the Exhibition!
