For its location in Velp (Noord Brabant) Stichting Dichterbij -a Dutch care institution that supports children and adults with intellectual disabilities- is looking for an innovative concept that offers space for living, day care activities and leisure that fits the needs of its clients and employees. It must become a place where clients can receive care in a safe and sheltered environment. At the same time the new concept must have an open and transparent character that stimulates social integration and strengthens the connection with the inhabitants of Velp.

The size and composition of the target groups served by Stichting Dichterbij has changed over the past years and will change even more in the future. With this changed scope and composition of the target group, the required and desired facilities, locations and functions of real estate have gradually changed.

The organization itself has also undergone a number of changes, resulting in a working environment that no longer fits the needs.

The terrain consists of a number of segments with functions like work (both for residents and employees), residence, daycare activities and leisure. The requirements for this design competition were specific and varied per segment and activity.

When assessing the design competition’s submissions, the following aspects played a vital role: the designer’s storyline, the architectonic quality of the plan, the designer’s vision on Healthcare 2.0 and the way this appeals and applies to its users, the extent to which the designer incorporates the terrain as a whole, making it blend in with the existing structures and at the same time enhance the connection with the inhabitants of Velp.
