In the summer of 2016 Phidias Community Cooking launched “Carefully Designed”: a design competition which turned out to be the solution to a spatial issue that Stichting Dichterbij in Horst was facing.
Stichting Dichterbij is a Dutch healthcare organization that provides care for mentally disabled children and adults, for their parents and their network. The organization is active in the southern provinces of The Netherlands and offers a broad spectrum of care to its target groups.
Where initially the care institution cared for about hundred clients under intensive care, the number of clients at the Mikado location had dropped to under fifty in 2016. This drop was caused by a number of factors including the ageing population and relocation of residents.
Requirements of Carefully Designed
The aim of the design competition as held by Phidias Community Cooking, was to create a design that would accommodate long-term care. Naturally, the design had to complement its environment. The competitors were given a lot of freedom to interpret the concept of healthcare 2.0 and implement it into their design.
At the closing day of the competition in October, 24 submissions from over 12 countries handed in their designs. But not only did this approach lead to a great number of inspiring ideas for Stichting Dichterbij, the competition also brought in the designing parties.
And the winners are…
Quickly after the professional jury announced the winners at the Award Ceremony in November, it became clear that the winning architects and design firms matched greatly with those involved from Dichterbij and Phidias Community Innovation. A true Design Team was born!
With the winner’s idea as a masterplan and the second prize winners designing sub areas of the masterplan, the winning design started evolving. And cooperation between the prizewinners of Carefully Designed has led to surprising ideas!
In an informal yet professional manner, Stichting Dichterbij got to know the people and parties behind these great ideas: designers who had been challenged to develop their idea within a set of conditions and restrictions to meet the aspirations of Stichting Dichterbij.

Phidias Community Cooking
At Phidias Community Cooking we organize competitions related to property, town and country planning. Phidias Community Cooking’s design competitions come about because of a client’s spatial issue. Holding a competition is Phidias Community Cooking’s way to surprise its client, blow him over and to enable him to view the presented issue from a different perspective. Another win is on the competitor’s side, as this approach allows competitors to play a key role in the project’s realization long time after submitting their great idea.
