A Phidias Community Cooking design competition: not just any competition. Besides the prizes and honorable mentions awarded to winners, the winning projects often acquire a chance to participate in the realization of the winning project.
A good example is Mikado, a terrain of Stichting Dichterbij Horst that was subject to the Carefully Designed design competition in 2016. This week we looked back at Carefully Designed with Jaap Rühl & Rodj Ommar (Ommar Rühl) and Twan van Lanen – Atelier van Lanen); shared second prize winners of that competition. The three are now working on the realization of healthcare clusters for residents to whom Dichterbij provides care.
What motivated you to register for the Carefully Designed competition?
The issue of urban planning redevelopment of the Mikado terrain in which contemporary care concept was centralized appeared to complement our studios’ vision. In a place where care and care issues are under constant development, a residential typology had to be realized that could facilitate and adapt to this future question.
Previous studies on lifetime flexibility within residential typologies in relation to today’s development within home automations have provided us with insights into new forms of living in which the social involvement of the resident has a central role.
How have you combined the design competition with your studio’s other projects?
What appealed to us was the relevance of the presented issue in combination with the planned strategy for the area. It made this assignment convenient to us and relevant to incorporate it in our studio, alongside other projects.
What has happened since the Award Ceremony?
We have conducted further research into the preconditions within care and associated context through visits to comparable sheltered accommodations and through design sessions.
How do you perceive the cooperation within the design team?
In order to provide a solid answer to the set issue and within the set preconditions, a number of disciplines are involved in the process. Finding a way in which all of these disciplines can provide their response to this issue in contemporary care is definitely a challenge.
What is your advice to competitors of Phidias Community Cooking design competitions?
Due to the rapid social changes in residential typologies driven by developments in technology and sustainability, many new residential and care concepts are possible. First, make sure you extract the exact preconditions from the design competition’s assignment and then formulate your future-proof vision. To me that approach would be a good starting point.
Phidias Community Cooking
At Phidias Community Cooking we organize competitions related to property, town and country planning. Phidias Community Cooking’s design competitions come about because of a client’s spatial issue. Holding a competition is Phidias Community Cooking’s way to surprise its client, blow him over and to enable him to view the presented issue from a different perspective. Another win is on the competitor’s side, as this approach allows competitors to play a key role in the project’s realization long time after submitting their great idea.
